Fruit picking in England is an excellent way to earn money working outside in the fresh air during the summer months.

This is physical work so you must be fit and prepared to work hard.

Chandler & Dunn Ltd employs Daily Paid Casual Fruit Pickers every year at times during the summer months.

DATES

 

Thinning Plums and Apples (hourly paid, not Piecework) – beginning of June to July.  Numbers required will vary according to the size of the crop.  NO VACANCIES FOR 2006

Picking Gooseberries (working 7.30 or 8am to 4pm Monday to Friday) – mid June to early July.  NO VACANCIES FOR 2006.

Picking Plums – mid or late August to early September.  Numbers required will vary according to the size of the crop.  NO VACANCIES FOR 2006

Picking Apples and Pears – late August or early September through to early October.  NO VACANCIES FOR 2006

There is NO WORK after the end of apple and pear picking.

Exact picking dates are not available due to the weather, crop, and market conditions at the time.

The busiest time is September, when we will need the most pickers.

HOURS OF WORK

Start 8 am. (You may not start before 7.30am)

Lunch 12.30 to 1pm.

Finish mostly 4 - 5 pm.  (Can be later in September if you wish)
We work Monday to Friday, and some Saturdays when busy.

PAY

Mostly paid by piecework, which means that you are paid by how much fruit you pick.  Faster workers can earn a lot of money this way.

The Agricultural Harvest Casual Hourly rate is £4.85 per hour from 1 October 2004 for workers aged 19 or over, £4.12 for 18 year olds, £3.40 for 17 year olds, £3.00 for 16 year olds (but the Piecework rates are the same for all ages).

Most pickers will earn much more than this.

Income Tax is NOT deducted from your pay.

You will be paid daily in cash

IMPORTANT INFORMATION – PLEASE READ!

We do NOT supply transport - you will need to get yourself to the farm for 8 am (and home again afterwards!).

Daily Paid Casual Fruit pickers are employed each day by the day.

All pickers must be over Compulsory School Age (i.e. born on or before 31.8.88), entitled to work in the UK, and are responsible for informing the Benefits Agency or Tax Office, if necessary, of their work.

You must bring your Passport or other Specified Document with you or you will NOT be allowed to do any work.  If you do not have a passport please contact us for alternative documents.  A driving licence / Judo club membership card / note from your Mum / etc are NOT suitable!!

You will need suitable clothing for working outside in all weather.  We recommend you bring a hat, sunscreen, waterproof clothing, and sensible footwear.

You must bring enough food for your lunch and plenty to drink.

There is NO ACCOMMODATION on either farm.  You MUST arrange your own accommodation in advance.   DO NOT arrive here unless you have somewhere to sleep!

Please note:  It is NOT possible to get a Work Permit for fruit picking work.

You MUST either not need permission to work in the UK, or already have permission to take any work in the UK.

 

We CANNOT employ anyone through the Seasonal Agricultural Workers Scheme (SAWS).

Directions:  From the A257 Sandwich to Canterbury road take the junction signposted Cop Street and Goldstone.  The road is called Cop Street.  Follow Cop Street to the crossroads, and go straight ahead to Lower Goldstone.  The farm entrance is on your left.   Here’s a map to help you find the entrance: Lower Goldstone Farm Entrance

Perry Farm, Wingham:

The farm is between Wingham and Preston.  You will need your own transport (bicycle or car), as there is no Public Transport.
